Batavia to inspect electric utility poles

BATAVIA – The city of Batavia has contracted with a company, Osmose, to evaluate the condition of its wooden electric poles.

The work will be performed during July and August. During this evaluation process, each pole will be visually inspected and then sounded to check for deterioration, according to a city news release.

Sounding a pole consists of striking the pole with a hammer.

If the pole has deterioration, the sound will be a “thud.”

If deterioration is found, workers will drill holes in the pole to verify the condition, according to the release.

The city will receive weekly reports on the condition of the poles inspected, and will use the information to plan the replacement of the poles.

Contractors performing the work will have proof they are working for the city, and the Osmose logo will be visible.

Residents who have questions can call the Batavia Electric Division at 630-454-2350.
