A place of camaraderie

James O. Breen Community Park in St. Charles was busy with both the two-legged and four-legged varieties Saturday.

The dog park was a popular spot on the sunny afternoon, as a variety of dogs and their owners entered the fenced area. Two 5-month-old puppies greeted my 10-year-old Golden Retriever eagerly. A man accompanied by his obedient German Shepherd tossed a tennis ball high into the air only to have the pack of 20 dogs scampering after the flying, yellow prize.

The people in the park area were equally as friendly as the dogs that day, as we all shared the shade in the 80-degree weather. As the fellow dog owners took shelter under the vast tree nestled in the corner of the park, the animals lapped out of a pink-and-white, polka-dotted water bowl. A man refilled the bowl with fresh water and, instantly, he became the VIP of the dog park. That day, James O. Breen Community Park wasn’t just an area to socialize energetic dogs, but a place of camaraderie.
