Seidel: Do you believe in magic?
Midwestern summers are a magical time for children, ripe with opportunities for growth and memory making.
Time away from school allows kids to get outside and play. Children develop social skills with new friends while riding bikes to Graham’s for ice cream, playing ghost in the graveyard or attending a fun-filled summer camp. These games and social experiences act as lessons outside of the classroom, fostering curiosity, imagination and teamwork.
Geneva parks are the perfect place for new friendships to grow. Cool off at Moore Park Spray Ground and you’re guaranteed to meet someone new running through the interactive sprinklers. Or visit Sunset Pool, where the pool, splash stations, slides and a sand playground provide a wonderful summer destination for all ages.
Have you ever floated in the pool while enjoying a hot summer movie? Enjoy family-friendly poolside screenings at Sunset Pool’s Flick n’ Floats with Pixar’s “Brave” on our big screen at 8:15 p.m. July 25, and “Hotel Transylvania” at 8 p.m. Aug. 15. Twilight admission rates apply. Teens will have a blast with exclusive access to the pool at Teen Movie Night with a screening of “The Hunger Games” from 8 to 11 p.m. Aug. 1. Cost is $5 per teen for residents ($6 for nonresidents).
Beautiful summer weather also offers opportunities to reconnect with nature. See Wheeler Park’s dry prairie filled with native wildflowers while playing The Links Disc Golf course. Or get up close and personal with live butterflies at Peck Farm Park’s Adopt a Butterfly programs from 10 to 11 a.m. July 27 and Aug. 17. Register to receive an official butterfly adoption certificate before releasing your new butterfly into the Butterfly House.
Relax along the scenic Fox River with free live music as Concerts in the Park continue every Wednesday in July at 7 p.m. at Island Park. Hear a mix of country and rock with White Saddle Band tonight. Or see Dueling Pianos on July 24 and Spoken Four on July 31.
Summertime is also a fantastic time to bond with family and create lasting memories. Sunset Pool’s Midsummer Poolside Luau is certain to be an unforgettable summer night for the whole family. From 6 to 9 p.m. this Friday, be transported to a tropical paradise in your own backyard. This truly unique experience includes traditional Hawaiian entertainment, dinner, decorations, swimming, hula lessons and more. Top the evening off with a cool summer treat from Dairy Queen available for purchase. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $11 a person for residents ($16 for nonresidents).
