Freshmen on the fairways

Sly wouldn't want to be the coach trying to figure out how to beat the St. Charles North girls golf team these next four years.

That's right, four years.

If you've been paying any attention to the local golf scene this summer, you know what Sly is talking about.

Gianna Furrie and Katie Lillie both have played well beyond their years this summer, and both are slated to join the North Stars this fall as freshmen. That shapes up as a 1-2 punch that will be hard for teams to match in the years to come.

Furrie, the younger sister of recently graduated North stalwart Ariana Furrie, pulled off quite the feat this month at the St. Charles Junior Tournament, carding the best two-day score of any of the golfers in the field. That includes the older girls and the entire boys field.

That's called bragging rights, Gianna. Take advantage!

Lillie, meanwhile, was impressive this week in the Chick Evans Junior Amateur, firing an opening round 79 at Itasca Country Club. She made waves earlier this summer, too, finishing an area-best seventh place in the IJGA-CDGA Junior Amateur tournament at Mill Creek.

Imagine these girls a few years down the line, when they're a little bigger and stronger. Could be a sight to behold.

But based on what they've shown during the course of the summer, they're going to be a boon for North's program right off the bat.
