Letter: Bringing back memories

To the Editor:

I read with great interest the Guest View titled "Time marches on" (Kane County Chronicle, June 22, 2013). As we little by little lose the touchstones of our past, we can only hope that the future will hold even better times and dreams for us all.

Having grown up as a Gaffney in Geneva, I well remember the Memorial Day celebrations. For many years, I marched in the parade as a Brownie, carrying my huge bouquet of hydrangeas to leave on the grave of my great-grandfather, Dr. Francis M. Marstiller. I still drop by to say hello to him every time I’m in Geneva.

Several years ago, my oldest daughter and I were vacationing in St. Charles and Geneva over Memorial Day weekend. It was such a treasure to once again attend the parade and the ceremonies that followed at the Westside Cemetery.

The opinion piece written by Kevin Gaffney brought back those memories and truly brightened my day. I hope that the future of the VFW will be as bright.
