To the Editor:
In her opinion piece that appeared in the July 17 edition of the Kane County Chronicle, Virginia Postrel describes a wonderful place that everyone would consider a happy discovery – a place that has books to examine, as well as Wi-Fi and an easy way to buy books online.
As we read the article, all of us at the St. Charles Public Library had a strong feeling of déjà vu. This place that Ms. Postrel recommends, Barnes & Noble, as a new business model already exists in every community – it is the local public library.
At your library, you may find a book you like by browsing the shelves and displays; looking in the catalog with its book summaries and reviews; by talking with a readers services specialist; or by checking the many recommended reading lists on the library’s website. You can even use the catalog and download e-books from the comfort and convenience of your own home.
When you find the perfect book, you may read it in the library or check it out and take it home. We’re a green and economical choice – all those books (and DVDs and online services) we buy are shared, don’t require storage space in your house, and have a great return on investment.
We’d love to have Ms. Postrel come visit us at the St. Charles Public Library. We have so many wonderful things to show her.
