Trey bien: Ruggles sets unofficial 3-point mark

WEST CHICAGO – Wheaton Academy junior Josh Ruggles set an unofficial world record by swishing 135 3-pointers in five minutes Thursday afternoon.

He took aim from the top of the key at the Warriors' gym from about 2:45 to 2:50 p.m. Ruggles shifted from the right wing, the site of his previous shooting exhibitions, in an effort to get a better look at the basket and keep his older brother, Brandon, from retrieving too many long rebounds. He attempted 147 threes overall, a 91.8 percent success rate.

"Shooting today definitely felt a lot better than the previous times I shot," said Ruggles, a Wheaton resident who recently connected on 111 threes in five minutes. "I just got in a rhythm and didn't feel tired at any point."

Ruggles' family is touting the feat as a world record. A video is posted online at YouTube. Laurie Koehn of the WNBA's Atlanta Dream is believed to hold the previous mark of 132. Ruggles, the reigning IHSA King of the HIll 3-point shooting champ, used two Wilson Evolution basketballs.

College basketball analyst Dick Vitale recognized Ruggles on Twitter later Thursday afternoon, thanks to some politicking from Brandon.

"That pumped me up a little bit," Josh Ruggles said. "Dick Vitale is always fun to listen to, and the fact that he tweeted it … it was really cool to see that."
