Anderson to run against Hultgren in 2014 midterm election

Published: Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

ST. CHARLES – Dennis Anderson, a Gurnee Democrat who lost a bid for the 14th Congressional District to Randy Hultgren, announced he will seek the Democratic nomination to run for the same office in the November 2014 election.

Anderson will make his formal announcement between 3 and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Filling Station Pub and Grill, 300 W. Main St., St. Charles. His announcement coincides with the Kane County Democrats sixth annual 14th Congressional District Picnic, a fundraiser.

Anderson, who never sought public office before his run in 2012, said he still wants to make a difference for his district.

"Washington is where it was a year and a half ago, and I think there's been a lack of progress virtually on all fronts that need to be addressed," Anderson said. "The country faces serious issues and deserves serious consideration – and I don't think we're getting it right now."

Anderson said part of his platform harkens back to a 1960s slogan: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

"There is no disagreement that there is a problem in Washington. I don't believe that our current representative of the 14th District has done much to alleviate the problem," Anderson said, referring to Hultgren, R-Winfield.

According to official results in the election Nov. 6, 2012, the vote was 177,603 to 124,351. Anderson lost to Hultgren by 53,252 votes. Still, Anderson said he has some level of name recognition from his first run for office that he hopes will work in his favor in the 2014 midterm elections.

"I know that there's a value in incumbency, but I think every election is new," Anderson said. "I am not looking at this race as a recapitulation of the last one."

Sean McCarthy, Hultgren's chief of staff, said the congressman has said at constituent groups that he will seek a third term, but Hultgren has not yet sent out a formal statement.

The district is comprised of seven suburban counties including McHenry, Lake, Kendall, Kane, DuPage, DeKalb and Will.
