Kane committee recommends OK for Valley View fire station
GENEVA – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District has taken the next step toward building a new fire station on the east side of the river, north of St. Charles.
Wednesday, the Kane County Board’s Development Committee recommended the full County Board approve a request from the Fox River district to build the new fire station off Route 25 in Valley View.
The fire district has staffed two stations – one on Route 64 in Campton Hills and the other on Gilbert Street in South Elgin – since 2011, when it ended its relationship with the St. Charles Fire Department.
The district has sought to relocate its South Elgin station to a site closer to Valley View from where many of its service calls originate.
Earlier this year, the district announced it reached a deal to acquire the former Wise-Hamlin Plastics factory at Route 25 and Carl Lee Road in Valley View.
Ken Shepro, a lawyer representing the fire district, told the committee the district believes the site is positioned perfectly because it is located on the east side of the Fox River between the Stearns Road and Red Gate Road bridges.
To build a station on that site the district first must secure permission from the County Board for the change in use on the property.
County Board members, however, indicated they
had few concerns over the project.
Kane County Development Department staff members said they had received recommendations for approval from the village of Wayne and from the neighborhood association for part of Valley View. They said the city of St. Charles did not respond to a Kane County request for comment on the proposed project.
County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said the project could “provide more favorable insurance rates” for residents of the fire district because the new fire station location would decrease response times to incidents in that area.
The matter could advance to the full County Board when it next meets in September.
