BATAVIA – The Batavia Police Department is investigating three residential burglaries within about a five-block radius that have occurred since Aug. 5.

Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said a burglar or burglars entered homes overnight in the 900 to 1200 blocks of Woodland Hills Road and in the 1600 block of Wagner Road in Batavia.

He said it appears entry was made through an open garage in one case and possibly through some unlocked windows in the other two cases.

He said homeowners were home during the time of the burglaries in all three cases and had no idea someone was in their house until they noticed items missing.

The burglar or burglars appear to be taking small electronics, such as smart phones.

None of the homeowners were approached by burglars, he added.

Mazza said that’s why it’s important to remind residents to lock their doors and windows, especially at ground level, and close garage doors before going to bed.

“Whoever is doing this, it appears, doesn’t want to hurt people,” he said. “They’re targeting things like smart phones, taking them and leaving.”

He said at this point in the investigation, it seems the same suspect or suspects have burglarized all three homes.

“Being that they’re so close to one another, it’s likely that the same person or people are involved,” he said. “I think at this point, the big thing is to inform residents this is going on and encourage them to report any suspicious activity to 911.”

Any residents with information can contact the Batavia Police Department’s Investigations Division at 630-454-2500.
