BURLINGTON, Iowa – After falling behind by four in the first, the Cougars tied the game in the eighth before the Burlington Bees walked off on an RBI single by Matt Scioscia in the Cougars’ 5-4 loss on Wednesday night at Community Field.
Michael Hamann (1-2) walked the leadoff batter in a tie game in the ninth inning. With Exicardo Cayones at first, Hamann tossed a pickoff attempt down the right field line to move Cayones to third base with no outs. Hamann intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases. Zach Wright had the first crack to end the game but hit a slow bouncing ball to Cougars (48-68, 18-32) second baseman Brad Zapenas.
Zapenas forced Cayones out at the plate for the first out. Matt Scioscia followed and drove a deep fly ball down the right field line that one hopped off the wall to bring Wade Hinkle in from third, giving the Bees (47-69, 21-30) the win.
Jeimer Candelario tied the game in the eighth inning on a two-out, solo home run. With the Cougars trailing by four in the fourth, Reggie Golden brought the Cougars to within one with a laser, three-run blast with two outs.
The Cougars continue a three-game series against the Burlington Bees at Community Field at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
