For several years now, the Kane County Chronicle has featured a high school columnist on its opinion page.

Many readers probably remember former columnist Mel Mazuc, a Kaneland High School student who went on to attend college at the University of Missouri.

Mel was followed by current columnist Courtney Phelan, who recently graduated from Geneva High School and is set to attend St. Mary’s College in Indiana this fall.

As Courtney transitions to college, she will wrap up her column. She has done outstanding work for us and has received a lot of positive feedback.

We wish her all the best as she starts a new chapter in life.

That being said, the Chronicle is seeking a new high school columnist for the upcoming school year. Preferred candidates will be juniors or seniors at a local high school this fall who have a strong interest in writing and are able to meet deadline.

Interested candidates are asked to send me a short letter explaining why they would like to become a columnist for the Chronicle and what they would hope to offer our readership. They also are asked to send two writing samples.

Materials can be sent to me using the contact information below. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

Some special visitors stopped by the Kane County Chronicle office Friday afternoon.

Chuck and Char, finger puppets who are actively promoting this year’s St. Charles Scarecrow Fest, toured our newsroom with Jason Pawlowski, marketing manager and festival liaison for the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Community members can check out photos of the scarecrow finger puppets visiting our office – as well as other destinations in St. Charles – by checking out the blog “Chuck and Char: A Scarecrow’s Life” at http://ascarecrowslife.wordpress.com. The photos from the Chronicle should be on the site Friday, Pawlowski said. A video from that visit can be viewed at www.kcchronicle.com/video.

To catch up on last week’s story that Chronicle reporter Ashley Sloboda wrote about Scarecrow Fest and Chuck and Char, visit www.kcchronicle.com and search for “scarecrow.”

Two new comic strips soon will appear in the Kane County Chronicle.

Starting with our Monday e-Edition, “Frank & Ernest” and “Soup to Nutz” will replace “Get Fuzzy” and “The Pajama Diaries.”

Reader feedback was taken into consideration as part of our comics changes. We hope our subscribers enjoy getting to know Frank and Ernest, as well as the Nutz family.
