GENEVA – A man identified as James R. Stevens, 58, of St. Charles, died Sunday after he apparently lost control of his motorcycle and struck a tree, police said.

Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said there were no witnesses to the crash itself, but it appeared Stevens was turning north into the 0-99 block of Kautz Road from Route 38 when he left the roadway and struck a tree about 2:46 p.m.

“He was just coming out of the construction zone just north of Route 38,” Passarelli said. “What led to him losing control, we don’t know. It appears he struck the tree with his body. That time of the afternoon, someone traveling on Kautz saw him soon after it happened and called us.”

Stevens was riding a 1985 Honda Nighthawk and not wearing a helmet, Passarelli said.

The West Chicago Fire Department transported Stevens to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield where he was pronounced dead, Passarelli said.

The traffic crash remains under investigation, he said.
