St. Charles Police Department honored for traffic efforts

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department has received the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge Award for its efforts to enhance traffic safety, the department announced Thursday in a news release.

“The members of the St. Charles Police Department make safety on our roads a priority,” Chief Jim Lamkin said in the release.

The award was created by the Illinois Chiefs of Police to enhance traffic safety on Illinois roads.

Agencies were judged and compared in these categories: training of officers; incentives and recognition; public information and education; enforcement activity; and effectiveness of efforts. St. Charles police documented what was accomplished in each subcategory, including occupant protection/seat-belt enforcement and impaired driving.

The department took first place in the state for the 36 to 50 Sworn Officers category and also placed first in the Occupant Protection/Seat Belt category.

“In 2012, the city of St. Charles continued a downward trend for the past five years with another reduction in the number of traffic crashes,” Lamkin said. “Safety belts have been proven to save lives, and we have made enforcement of safety belts and child safety seat installations an important part of keeping our roads safe.”

The Traffic Safety Challenge program is coordinated by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Committee. It is supported by a grant administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety as well as funding from private entities.

This was the 20th year of the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge.
