BATAVIA - A Speedway gas station is being proposed on six acres of city-owned land at the northeast corner of Wilson Street and Kirk Road.
Aldermen on Tuesday are set to vote on a purchase agreement between the city of Batavia and Speedway, which wants to buy the land for $650,000. The property, which is zoned for commercial use, was deeded to the city in November 2010.
Aldermen have been mulling the sale of the land. There was a deed restriction on the land that prohibited selling it before Nov. 30. But that restriction has lapsed, and city staff is recommending aldermen move ahead with selling the land.
“Staff feels that the highest and best use would be to sell the property and to get it back on the tax rolls as commercial property,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening has said.
The property generated about $30,000 in annual property tax revenues for all taxing bodies before it was filed as an exempt property, Buening said. He said the best scenario would be for the land to be redeveloped with a gas station.
“Local trucks could benefit from such a facility on the way to the industrial parks to the north,” Buening has said.
