Prep roundup: St. Charles East boys golf edges Batavia

NORTH AURORA – St. Charles East edged Batavia, 155-159, in a brisk Upstate Eight Conference River Division boys golf dual meet Wednesday at Fox Valley Golf Course.

“Close match. It was a great battle,” Saints coach John Stock said. “Be within four strokes, and both teams broke 160.”

Medalist Jake Bertke (37) and Mick Vyzral (38) led a balanced effort for East. Trouble was, the host Bulldogs were just as tightly bunched.

Nick LaRocco led the team with a 39, with Andrew Nelson, Nick Robinson and Jacob Piechota each one shot off the pace.

“A good way to get underway,” said Stock, whose team played its conference opener.

St. Charles North 160, DeKalb 167: At Bowes Creek in Elgin, Matt Samuelson shot 36 to lead North in a nonconference dual. Raghav Cherala and Jarron Gandy followed with 41s.

Wheaton Academy 152, Glenbard South 165: At Pheasant Run in St. Charles, medalist Grant Gosden carded a 2-under-par 35 to boost Wheaton Academy. Zack Spear was next with a 37.

St. Francis 2, Batavia 0 (25-7, 25-14): At Batavia, defending 3A state champion St. Francis notched its first win of the season behind Lisa Mordell’s 12 service points and three aces.

“I thought we played well in most categories,” Spartans coach Peg Kopec said. “I think it was nice to get this one under their belt. Opening up with Mother McAuley as your first game [Friday] was tough.”

Sam Dubiel (11 digs) and Molly Haggerty (six kills) also shined for the 1-1 Spartans.

Maddie Jaudon and Heather Meyer contributed five digs each for the Bulldogs (5-3), while Audrey Faulhaber had nine assists and four digs.

Oswego East 2, Aurora Central Catholic 0 (25-12, 27-25): At Aurora, Lauren San Diego (18 digs) and Clare Tack (14) sparked 1-5 ACC defensively. Maddy Trnka added three kills in the Chargers’ home opener.

St. Charles East 2, Lyons 2: At St. Charles, Jared Brown and Rob Wolak tallied first-half goals for East (2-0-1), which was unable to preserve its halftime advantage. Lyons scored twice in the first 20 minutes after intermission.

“It was end-to-end after that,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “It was a pretty good high school game, to be honest with you. Defensively we were good for the most part, but unfortunately gave up two sloppy goals.”

Geneva 5, Wheaton North 3: At Geneva, doubles play keyed a nonconference victory for 3-1 Geneva.

The No. 1 tandem of Margo Hess and Emma Hazel and the No. 3 team of Liz Fallon and Maddie Cordaq both won tiebreakers.

Aurora Central Catholic 5, Lisle 0: At Lisle, ACC rolled to a sweep behind singles victories from Alex Horton and Courtney Decker.
