The following is what our readers sounded off about this week:
What heroes are made of
Firemen don't just put out fires. I'd like to acknowledge the many services our Batavia firemen give us. Aside from putting out fires, their main function, I have seen them at senior clubs, giving instructions on how to save a person if they are choking, and also taking blood pressure while answering questions. My fire alarm started to beep, so I changed the battery. A few days later, when I came home, I found it beeping again. I called the non-emergency number, and the firemen came. It was the carbon monoxide detector. In no time, they inspected it and found it was too close to the fire alarm. They relocated it, and the beeping stopped. Thank you, one and all. This is truly what heroes are made of. We are so lucky to have our Batavia firemen.
Happy with dogs from a store
On puppy mills: We bought two of our dogs at a store. And those puppies are sold regularly because we have been going there for two years, and it seems every other month we go there, the puppies we've seen are gone. We got a brother and a sister. I am glad we got both of them. I didn't want to get one without the other. We just got them both, and we're very happy. Yes, they came from a store. How they came there, I don't know. We've got mixed breeds, and we're happy. It's been more than two years now. These are small dogs. We're very happy.
What a slap in the face
Shame on the board of education in District 304, and (Superintendent) Dr. Kent Mutchler. It was one year ago that teachers were asked to take a pay freeze because of the economy, but yet he is getting thousands more for raising ACT scores and getting the teacher evaluation system in place. I'd like to know what lessons he taught to students to raise those test scores that he is getting all the credit for. What a slap in the face to taxpayers and teachers. What a sad, sad state of affairs. Who gets to evaluate the board of education and Dr. Mutchler? I'd give you an "E" for embarrassment and an "F" for failure.
Remove the arrow
Here I sit again at a green light, at this left-turn-on-arrow-only light, clearly no oncoming cars all the way north to the light at Randall and Silver Glen, but no turn arrow. When is someone going to re-evaluate the need for this turn-on-arrow-only sign? It needs to be someone who has to endure this Bolcum and Randall intersection left arrow daily. The solution is simple – remove the turn-on-arrow-only sign. How does one get this done?
Little regard for taxpayers
Just finished writing my school tax check. Geneva School Board please, please, please stop raising our taxes so you can provide outstanding raises, pensions and healthcare for teachers and administrators – three things we do not have here in our home. ... Geneva is going orange this week to promote awareness of the hunger and the hardship in our very own community. Why does the board keep ignoring the fact that not all Genevans are as well off as they are, or as teachers are? Every year we hear from candidates who will hold the line on taxes. Then they get elected, and they meld right into the tax, tax, tax mentality. Voting out taxers just replaces them with another. It's disconcerting that the board has so little regard for citizen taxpayers.
No air conditioning for administrators
I have a suggestion for the St. Charles school air conditioning issues. Turn off all the air conditioning in the administration buildings and mobiles, and don't turn it back on until each student in the district has a safe and comfortable learning environment, namely air conditioning.
