KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week: St. Charles East junior girls cross country runner Torree Scull

St. Charles East junior girls cross country runner Torree Scull opened the season with a runner-up finish at Saturday’s Leavey Invitational at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve. She covered the Saints’ home course in 18:17 en route
to earning a nod as the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County
Chronicle Athlete of the Week. Scull caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about her race and the season ahead. The following is an edited transcript:

At this point, is your
familiarity with the LeRoy Oakes course basically
second-nature?

It’s pretty much exactly what
I’m used to, so that was nice. ….
I love that course just because
I’m so used to running it, and it’s honestly such a great course to run.

How was your offseason training program?

My training went really well. It was really good. It was pretty similar to the past. We had a new coach this year [Mike Backer], but we pretty much were on the same schedule as usual, so that was nice.

How has the team taken
to coach Backer so far?

He’s been really good. He’s
done a really nice job of just taking control of the program, and I think he’s done a really great job of keeping the tradition going with our team.

If you had to have one teammate help you with some tough homework, who would it be, and why?

I would say my friend, Natalie Filippi, because we’re in the same chemistry and that’s one of my harder classes.
