Some Geneva Comcast customers will need upgrade

Published: Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

GENEVA – Geneva customers currently receiving Comcast cable’s “Limited Basic” service without any equipment will need to have devices added to their TVs to maintain existing programming.

Comcast will begin encrypting its digital network signal for “Limited Basic” services Sept. 24. Encryption will reduce the need for home service calls and provide enhanced network security, according to Comcast.

When “Limited Basic” service is encrypted, all Xfinity video customers will need equipment supplied by Comcast connected to each TV to continue receiving services.

Customers who have a set-top box, digital adapter or retail “CableCard” device connected to each TV or subscribe to a higher cable package, will not be affected by this change.

Comcast customers without equipment can receive free devices without a service fee for a limited time, according to the company. Comcast was required by the FCC to send notices to customers announcing the encryption changes.

Comcast has a toll free number, 855-860-8989, and website, www.comcast.com/digitaladapterinfo, so customers can learn more about the equipment and eligibility.

Calls directed to the city of Geneva will be referred to Comcast.
