MURPH’S MOTE: Local football grads get to play in the Chicago area

Shaw Media sports copy editor Kevin Murphy picks his top sporting events to watch on TV this weekend with a spotlight on local graduates:

College football: Washington vs. Illinois at Soldier Field, 5 p.m. today, BTN

St. Charles East graduate Tim Russell will have plenty of friends and family in Chicago.

College football: Akron at Michigan, 11 a.m., today, BTN

Marmion graduate and Michigan offensive lineman Graham Glasgow will look to keep the Wolverines (2-0) undefeated.

College football: Western Michigan at Northwestern, 8 p.m. today, BTN

Former Kaneland and Northern Illinois football star and Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck will try to get his first win as a Division I coach.

St. Charles graduate and former Northwestern football player Pat Durr is the honorary captain for Northwestern’s game in Evanston.

Durr, an alumnus from the Class of 1999, played in 48 games for the Wildcats. He missed most of the 2002 season with a torn ACL, MCL, lateral meniscus and PCL as well as a partially chipped femur but still came back for his senior season in 2003. Durr closed his career as NU’s 12th all-time leading tackler.

NFL: Minnesota at Bears, noon, Sunday, Fox

The Vikings have All-Pro Adrian Peterson, but then again Christian Ponder is the quarterback. And let’s face it, I won’t be worrying as much about the Bears chances to win in Week 2 as I was in Week 1.

College football: Alabama at Texas A&M, 2:30 p.m., today, CBS

Yahoo Sports reported Wednesday five SEC players received improper benefits during their college careers, including former Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker. Add in returning Heisman Trophy winner and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, you can bet that the NCAA will be watching.

Golf: PGA Tour, BMW Championship, final round, at Lake Forest, 12:30 p.m., Sunday, NBC

Will Tigers Woods be in the hunt? Woods has finished out of the top 20 only one time in 15 tournaments in the Chicago area, including the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields.

His last time in the Chicago suburbs was not memorable, posting a 0-3-1 record at Medinah last year in the Ryder Cup.
