Published: Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

ST. CHARLES – Traffic on several roads in downtown St. Charles will be affected by running events this weekend, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

South First Street between Illinois and Indiana streets will be closed for the CASA Kane County Fox Valley Kids Marathon, set for 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Prairie Street bridge will close temporarily at the start of the children’s run. The closure is expected to be less than 30 minutes.

Sunday, traffic will be affected by the Fox Valley Marathon, which is set for 7 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m.

The race begins in St. Charles along South First Street and the Illinois Street bridge. Runners will continue south to Aurora before returning to the finish line on the Illinois Street bridge in St. Charles.

Runners will travel south on South First Street until the road meets with South Second Street. At that point, runners and motoring traffic will share the road. Officers directing traffic will move one lane of traffic at a time until the final runner has passed into Geneva.

About an hour after the race begins, officers and emergency personnel will be along Riverside Avenue to help direct traffic for the return phase. Several east-side roads along the river will be detoured or divided because of the runners.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra time and patience when commuting throughout the city.

Vehicles that need to cross the Fox River should use the Main Street bridge in St. Charles or the State Street bridge in Geneva.

The Prairie Street and Illinois Street bridges in St. Charles will be closed during the entire marathon.
