MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland girls volleyball team won its first Northern Illinois Big 12 East game under new coach Kerri McCastland on Tuesday night, sweeping Morris, 25-13, 25-18.
The Knights (7-8 overall, 1-1 NI Big 12 East) flirted with that milestone Monday before losing in three games against host DeKalb.
Ellie Dunn contributed 10 kills and 10 digs for Kaneland, with support from Kathy Nguyen (12 digs) and Vanessa Gould (seven kills).
Jenny Lubic (nine assists) and Hannah Nauert (eight) shined on the attack, while Riley Hannula contributed five blocks.
Burlington Central 2, Genoa-Kingston 0 (25-16, 25-21): At Burlington, Central (7-3, 2-0 Big Northern Conference East) benefited from solid nights from Makenna Jensen (nine kills, eight blocks) and Allie O’Reilly (26 digs).
DeKalb 3, Kaneland 1: At DeKalb, Kaneland dropped its Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener despite a goal from Ignacio Toscano off an Anthony Parillo assist. The Knights fall to 3-3-1 overall.
Pepsi Showdown: Wheaton Academy 2, Metea Valley 0. Wheaton Academy improved to 7-1 behind goals from Sam Hardy and Casey Zimmerman. Ty Seager assisted on Hardy’s first-half tally, and goalkeeper Drew Sezonov made seven saves. The Warriors advance to the showdown quarterfinals.
Kaneland 152, Sycamore 174: At Sycamore Golf Club, medalist Matt Yonkovich shot a 34 for Kaneland while teammates Brody Kuhar (38), Jake Hed (39) and Jesse Denton (41) also helped the Knights to the Northern Illinois Big 12 win.
St. Francis 149, Chicago Christian 154: At Silver Lakes in Orland Park, St. Francis’ Jonathan Nocek shot a 33 to lead the way in the Suburban Christian Conference win.
St. Charles North 169, Geneva 190; At Pottawatomie in St. Charles, freshman Gianna Furrie shot a 2-over-par 39 to lead North, which also got scoring rounds from Jessica Grill (41), Sam Scroggin (43) and Kate Lillie (46).
Allie Henrie led Geneva with a 46, while Mary Clare Novak, Nicole Hassels and Katherine Flatt each shot 48s for the Vikings.
Neuqua Valley 190, St. Charles East 203: At St. Charles Country Club, East dropped the UEC meet despite a team-best 45 from Reagan Stanton.
St. Charles East 6, Elgin 1: At St. Charles, East swept the four doubles matches in the UEC River win. Carly Huskisson and Alexa Huskisson won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles while Emmy Russell and Jamie Youngberg also were unscathed at No. 3 doubles.
Kaneland 5, Rochelle 0: At Rochelle, Kaneland rolled past Rochelle, including straight-sets singles wins for Sammie Schrepferman at the top spot and Stephanie Zwick at No. 2.
Wheaton Academy 3, Rosary 2: At Aurora, Wheaton Academy won both singles matches with victories from Betsy Jones (No. 1) and Sarah Jagrowski (No. 2) and took a three-set, tiebreaker-laden triumph at No. 3 doubles from Amanda Williamson and Katie Mann. Rosary’s top doubles team of Megan Conlin and Andrea Goyao won, 6-4, 6-2.
St. Francis 5, Marian Central 0: At Woodstock, St. Francis’ SCC sweep included a 6-2, 6-3 win from Shannon Donovan and Samantha Robinson at No. 3 doubles.
