Into the Storm: A good chance of severe weather

The difference between Elburn (left) and Rockford (right) has been significant this year. Rockford will welcome wet weather.

Today's blog is about the chances for severe storms. Looking at the models and forecasts, late today and tonight we will be looking at a good chance of severe weather.

This is the beginning of our second severe weather season, as we transition from summer to autumn. It has been a while since I have seen so many storms north of a warm front influenced by the warm front. As we approach a high temperature close to 90 today and high moisture, the cold front approaching this air mass will fire storms.

It isn't 100 percent that weather will be severe, but expect some severe storms. Yesterday, there was no severe risk, but there were severe thunderstorm warnings in some areas. Stay tuned to local media and radio and have weather radios on.

Northwest Illinois is finally getting much needed rain. As you can see in the photo, the difference between Elburn and Rockford is big. We are OK here with rain so far, but Rockford is in desperate need of this rain.

The tornado threat is low, but it is not 0 percent. Tornadoes can form with any storm, so keep an eye on the sky today, tonight and tomorrow. Stay safe.
