Murph's 'Mote: NIU football visits Purdue

Shaw Media sports copy editor Kevin Murphy picks his top sporting events to watch on TV this weekend with a spotlight on local graduates:

College football: Northern Illinois at Purdue, 11 a.m., today, ESPN2
NIU starting outside linebacker Rasheen Lemon was suspended for last week's game against Eastern Illinois due to an unspecified violation of team rules. Carey said the suspension is indefinite.

Junior Michael Santacaterina, a Geneva gradaute, stepped in and led the Huskies with 15 tackles.

"I just wanted to go in and do my job," Santacaterina told Shaw Media. "Just make plays when they came to me. I didn't want to get out of my gaps, try and do too much."

St. Charles North graduate Ryan Brown is the starting right tackle for the Huskies.

Aurora Christian's Chad Beebe, Joel Bouagnon and Brandon Mayes are on the NIU roster along with Marmion's Bobby Winkel.

College football: Miami (Ohio) at Illinois, 11 a.m., today, BTN
St. Charles East graduate Tim Russell is the starting place-holder for the Illini this season. Russell, a walk-on, earned a scholarship before the start of this season.

Marmion gradaute and redshirt freshman Miami (Ohio) running back Garret Becker is on the Redhawks' roster.

Women's college volleyball: Nebraska at Illinois, 4 p.m., today, BTN
St. Francis grad and Illinois setter McKenna Kelsay looks to help the Illini win a Big Ten Conference match at home.

Fellow St. Francis grad and Nebraska outside hitter Kelsey Robinson and the Huskers will be playing their second conference match in two days.

Women's college volleyball: Michigan at Penn State, 6:30 p.m., today, BTN
St. Francis product, St. Charles native and Michigan assistant coach Erin Virtue looks to help the Wolverines in a Big Ten match.

Pro football: Bears at Detroit, noon, Sunday, Fox
Can the Bears start off the season 4-0 with a win against the their NFC North rivals? They'll have to slow down Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson.

The Lions (2-1) are one of only five teams in the NFC with a winning record.

The Bears have lost Henry Melton with a torn ACL, while Detroit's Reggie Bush sat out the win against Washington with a sprained knee.

College football: Mississippi at Alabama, 5:30 p.m. today, ESPN
Ole Miss is 3-0 for the first time since 1989 and coming off a dominant road victory over Texas on Sept. 14.

That means the Rebels have had two weeks to prepare for the No. 1 Crimson Tide (3-0).

Pro hockey: Preseason, Washington at Blackhawks, 7 p.m., today, CSN+
The Hawks look to put the finishing touches on before the regular season starts Tuesday.
