St. Charles East football has no trouble with Elgin
ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East football team celebrated homecoming in style, pounding Elgin, 42-16, on Friday night.
After a tough loss at the hands of Neuqua Valley last week, the Saints (4-1, 2-0 UEC River) appeared to be back on track on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball against an outmatched and winless Elgin team.
The Saints’ offense was paced by quarterback Jimmy Mitchell, who repeatedly exploited the edge of the Elgin defense.
Mitchell methodically picked apart the secondary, going 10 for 17 passing with 258 yards and five touchdowns.
Receiver Mitch Munroe was on the receiving end of Mitchell’s first two touchdown passes, and later added a 34-yard run to round out his offensive effort.
Receiver Brannon Berry also was a solid target for Mitchell, pulling in three passes and scoring a touchdown of his own on a 57-yard Mitchell pass.
Receiver AJ Washington added a touchdown on a Mitchell pass that he snatched out of the air from an Elgin defender, and tight end Phil Hopper scored on a 44-yard screen pass that Mitchell shoveled to him after a muffed snap.
After struggling against Neuqua Valley’s kick return team last week, East took special caution with its kickoffs. The Saints kicked away from dangerous Elgin return man Jaylen Clemons after he had a 54-yard return on the opening kickoff.
East kicker Pat Frio used a series of directional and short kicks to keep the ball out of Clemons’ hands and avoid a repeat of last week.
East coach Mike Fields was happy to bounce back with the win, but he still wants to see improvement out of his team before its conference matchup against Geneva next Friday.
“We challenge our guys every week to get better week to week,” Fields said. “We’ll look at the film and see where we’re at. We’ve got to do it for four quarters.”
The Saints played without starting running back Erik Anderson, who was hurt in the game against Neuqua Valley.
“He’s doing OK, I think he’ll be back next week,” Fields said about Anderson. “This week off I think helped him.”
