Prep roundup: Kaneland’s Guyton edges DeKalb’s Russell for crown

ROCHELLE – Kaneland junior Tori Guyton didn't exactly shrug off her medalist round in Tuesday's Northern Illinois Big 12 girls golf meet.

Still, she knew her 85 at Fairways Golf Course wasn't her best, either.

"I didn't really have that great of a day today to tell you the truth, but at the end of the day I started to hit the ball long and straight," Guyton said. "My putting was kind of a disaster, but I was keeping it in the fairways and staying away from the trees, which helped on a tight course."

Electing to play as an individual in a scattering of girls tournaments rather than as part of the Kaneland boys team as she did last season, Guyton edged DeKalb's Maggie Russell (88) for the crown. The Knights' Julia VanGemert joined Guyton as an all-conference honoree, carding a 94.

Guyton and VanGemert have known each other since middle school and often practice together.

Rosary 207, St. Francis 277: At Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, medalist Victoria Phipps (44) and Emily Bakala (48) paced Rosary.

Indian Creek 199, Aurora Central Catholic 218: At Phillips Park in Aurora, ACC could not overcome the visitors' top team score of the season.

St. Charles North 2, Elgin 0 (25-9, 25-16):
At St. Charles, Sydney Wohlert dished 14 assists for North, while Taryn DalDegan added 10. Taylor Krage added eight kills for the North Stars (16-4, 3-1 Upstate Eight Conference River Division).

Yorkville 2, Kaneland 1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-15): At Yorkville, Ellie Dunn (10 kills) and Kathy Nguyen (12 digs) helped keep Kaneland close in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East loss.
