Letter: Hurting real people

To the Editor:

Please join me in telling Congressman Randy Hultgren his views are too radical for our county. I am outraged that he seems to support shutting down our government in a crazy attempt to stop the Affordable Care Act from fully implementing. The U.S. House has already taken more than 40 votes, which did nothing. Couldn’t he and others be spending their time more productively working out compromises that would help us?

The ACA has already helped many citizens through slowing the rise of costs. Soon, those with pre-existing conditions no longer need to worry about being denied or cut off from help when it is needed most. Yes, young people do need health insurance. My son had cancer when he was 19 and no insurance at work. He recently had a bad fall and – as a contractor – had no insurance. It will be years before they will get it all paid. Stop the scare tactics, please!

Mr. Hultgren voted in favor of cutting food stamps (SNAP). Are we so desperate that we must cut the safety net for our most vulnerable? Ask him to live on $5 a day for food. I have been a hunger advocate for nearly 30 years. SNAP is a proven program and until recently had bi-partisan support for decades.

Call his office at 202-225-2976. Ask him to get accurate information about hunger and health care in our county and country. Tell him we do not want the government shut down or to default on loans – that hurts real people.
