AURORA – Trevor Jones scored on a header off a cross from Gavin Sanchez and goalie Matt Fletcher made six saves to lead the host Marmion boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Oswego on Saturday.
The goal, which came in the 51st minute, was the fifth of the season for Jones, a junior midfielder who has taken on a larger offensive load since senior striker Flynn Collins was lost for the season following surgery to repair a broken jaw suffered against St. Charles East.
“I felt like I was struggling at the beginning of the season,” Jones said. "When he was gone, I thought the team needed someone to step up so I’ve been trying to do that.”
Jones has scored in all four games since Collins went down and the Cadets (9-6-2) are 3-0-1 in those matches. That is part of a larger hot streak that has seen them go 6-1-1 in their last eight outings.
“Trevor is playing very well right now,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said. “He’s playing right underneath that high striker. Flynn was a high striker, so we’ve been putting Jake Hutchison up in Flynn’s spot and he’s opening a lot of space for Trevor to sneak in.”
