Saturday's Prep Roundup: Marmion boys soccer tops Oswego

AURORA – Trevor Jones scored on a header off a cross from Gavin Sanchez and goalie Matt Fletcher made six saves to lead the host Marmion boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Oswego on Saturday.

The goal, which came in the 51st minute, was the fifth of the season for Jones, a junior midfielder who has taken on a larger offensive load since senior striker Flynn Collins was lost for the season following surgery to repair a broken jaw suffered against St. Charles East.

“I felt like I was struggling at the beginning of the season,” Jones said. "When he was gone, I thought the team needed someone to step up so I’ve been trying to do that.”

Jones has scored in all four games since Collins went down and the Cadets (9-6-2) are 3-0-1 in those matches. That is part of a larger hot streak that has seen them go 6-1-1 in their last eight outings.

“Trevor is playing very well right now,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said. “He’s playing right underneath that high striker. Flynn was a high striker, so we’ve been putting Jake Hutchison up in Flynn’s spot and he’s opening a lot of space for Trevor to sneak in.”

Gateway City Classic: At O'Fallon, Mo., St. Charles East (14-0-4) remained unbeaten by winning two matches on the final day of the tournament, topping Kicakpoo (Mo.), 1-0, and Lincoln (R.I.), 4-0. Daniel DiLeonardi scored in both matches for the Saints while goalkeeper Chris Lucatorto notched a pair of shutouts.

Hampshire Tournament: Burlington Central beat Hampshire, 4-1, to win the tournament title behind two goals for Matt O'Connor. Central (16-1) has won 14 matches in a row.

BOYS GOLF

Suburban Christian Conference Tournament: At White Pines in Bensenville, St. Francis and Marmion finished as co-champions with team scores of 625 in the two-day event. Jonathan Nocek of St. Francis' two-day 149 claimed medalist honors while Marmion's Joe Fritz finished with a 152.

Lake Park Invitational: At Indian Lakes in Bloomingdale, St. Charles North finished in third place behind four scores in the 70s – Matt Samuelson (75), JT Grill (76), Santino Salamone (77) and Raghav Cherala (79). North finished behind victorious Hinsdale Central and second-place York.

Freeport Invitational: Victoria Clinton placed second individually (17:52.68) to help Kaneland win the girls team title in the 11-team field. Brianna Bower (18:08.62) came in fifth for Kaneland.

The Kaneland boys placed second in the 10-team field led by Kyle Carter (10th place, 16:02.51).
