Wheaton Academy's Ruggles beats pros, wins Spanish shooting title

Wheaton Academy junior Josh Ruggles won the "Supercopa" 3-point shootout in Spain on Saturday, defeating former Bulls forward Andres Nocioni and several other professional players in the process.

Ruggles, 16, was invited to compete in the "ACB" professional league's competition in Vitoria, Spain, after gaining global attention for making 135 out of 147 3-point shots in a 5-minute span in August.

According to Twitter reports from his AAU program, Mercury Elite, Ruggles defeated North Carolina State all-time 3-point leader Scott Woods in the quarterfinals, Nocioni in the semifinals and former Spanish league scoring champion Jaycee Carroll in the finals.

One of nine contestants, Ruggles told the Chronicle earlier this week that he would not be able to accept the cash prize if he won the contest to avoid IHSA and NCAA infractions.

Ruggles is the reigning IHSA King of the Hill 3-point shooting state champion. He traveled to Spain with his parents and older brother, Brandon.
