Athlete of the Week

KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week: Kaneland girls cross country’s Victoria Clinton

Why she was selected: Finished 2nd individually in 17:52.68 to help Kaneland Saturday’s 11-team Freeport Invitational

Kaneland girls cross country standout Victoria Clinton navigated the Freeport Invitational course in her top time of the season Saturday. Her run continued a strong start to the season and earned her a nod as Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley spoke with Clinton about the Freeport race and more. The following is an edited transcript:

Which courses do you prefer: on campus or forest preserve?
I like the ones on or around campus, like the grassy area. I like that type of soft grass. … It’s easier on your feet and legs.

How do you prepare when you face a long bus ride before the race?
I do some stretches on the bus. ... Yeah, right when we get to the course in our quiet time before the race, we walk the course an make sure we know every turn. And I also just get very well warmed-up before the race.

Where do you feel your progression is at this point in the season?
That was my fastest time this season season so far. .. I’ve been feeling pretty good, just trying to gain some confidence and feel strong without any pain. Just trying to get to that perfection.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be, and why?
I would have to say Aislinn Lodwig ... because she’s really good at explaining things and she’ll always crack a joke and make it fun while learning and teaching me things.
