MURPH’S ‘MOTE: Local grads on Big Ten teams

Shaw Media sports copy editor Kevin Murphy picks his top sporting events to watch on TV this weekend with a spotlight on local graduates:

College football: Army at Eastern Michigan, 11 a.m., today, CBSSN

Batavia graduate Cole Gardner is a redshirt freshman tight end for Eastern Michigan.

College football: Lehigh at Columbia, 11 a.m. today, NBCSN

St. Charles North graduate Ben Kaplan is a true freshman and plays wide receiver for the Columbia Lions.

College football: Michigan at Penn State, 4 p.m. today, ESPN

Marmion’s Ryan Glasgow and Graham Glasgow, and St. Francis’ Kyle Bosch look to keep the Wolverines undefeated.

Graham made his first career start at center after starting the previous four games at left guard.

“Graham’s always graded out better as a center than at guard,” said Michigan senior offensive tackle Taylor Lewan after this past Saturday’s game. “He has a little more control, a little more responsibility and it keeps him more focused in the game. As far as I could tell, he had a good game today, but we’ll have to watch the film.”

Women’s college volleyball: Northwestern at Purdue, 5 p.m. today, BTN

Burlington Central graduate and Northwestern outsider hitter Stephanie Holthus has been the face for the Wildcats program for the past three years.

Holthus is in the top five in NU’s all-time in kills and is in the top 10 in digs. She was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Sept. 23. Holthus was also named MVP of the Wildcat Classic and MVP of the Wildcat Challenge.

She is a preseason All-Big Ten selection and was elected team captain.

NBA: Preseason, Washington at Bulls, at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 4 p.m. today, CSN

Who doesn’t want to get excited for the Bulls’ regular season? This game just brings us closer with a little bit more playing time for Derrick Rose.

NHL: Buffalo at Blackhawks, 7 p.m. today, WGN

The Hawks would like to not have to face Buffalo’s top goaltender, Ryan Miller, as he is listed day-to-day. Miller, in the season opener, lost 1-0 to Ottawa, but made 45 saves.

At least Buffalo (0-4-1) hasn’t replaced its coach yet. The Philadelphia Flyers fired their coach after not winning a game, within the first three games of the season.

NFL: Green Bay at Baltimore, noon Sunday, Fox

If you’re like me, and you’re a Bears fan, then you’re watching for Green Bay to screw up on every play and maybe for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to somehow, accidentally get injured.
