One dies, another seriously injured in Route 25 crash in Batavia

BATAVIA – An early morning single-vehicle crash in Batavia resulted in a fatality and a serious injury to another occupant, according to police.

Batavia Police Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said police responded to a call at 12:57 a.m. Wednesday for a single-vehicle accident on Route 25. Salvador J. Esparza, 32, of Aurora, was traveling northbound in a 1990 Mercedes Benz when he lost control and exited the road on the west side, according to a news release. His vehicle went airborne before striking a tree and then came to rest in the parking lot of the Batavia VFW at 645 S. River St., Batavia, Mazza said.

Esparza and a passenger in the vehicle, Amos Martinez, 33, of Aurora, both were ejected from the vehicle. Mazza said both were taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where Esparza later died of injuries that resulted from the crash. Mazza said Martinez was in seriously condition and as of Wednesday afternoon, he was in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Batavia Police Department continues to investigate the accident with assistance from the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
