St. Charles offers grants to beautify corridors

ST. CHARLES – Property owners along the city’s major thoroughfares can get a financial boost from St. Charles for certain improvement projects.

The St. Charles Corridor Improvement Commission is offering 50/50 matching grants for landscape
and streetscape improvements at properties with frontage along Kirk Road, Randall Road, Main Street and Route 38, planner Matt O’Rourke said.

“It’s a beautification grant,” he said. “The city’s really trying to invest in our major corridors to make it attractive for everybody.”

This year, $25,000 has been allotted to the program and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, O’Rourke said.

He noted the program was briefly suspended during the economic downturn.

Although most of the properties along the corridors are businesses, other types of properties can receive the grant, O’Rourke said, naming St. John Neumann Catholic Church as a past example.

With construction on East Main Street finished, the matching grants could be a timely venture for businesses in the east gateway, O’Rourke said.

Eligible improvements include landscape design services, plantings and decorative fencing.

“If somebody’s got their parking lot too close to the road, we can help remove some of that asphalt to turn it into landscaping,” O’Rourke said.

Applicants go through an approval process and receive grant money after their projects are completed, O’Rourke said.

Interested property owners can call O’Rourke at 630-377-4443 or visit www.stcharlesil.gov/forms for information.
