Prep Roundup: St. Francis football rolls, return to .500
WHEATON – James Butler rushed five times for 147 yards and two scores Friday, boosting the St. Francis football team to a 56-7 victory against Guerin in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover.
The Spartans (4-4) must win their regular-season finale against SCC Blue rival St. Edward next week to become playoff-eligible.
“We just want to go out and play a great game against a tough, top-level opponent,” Spartans offensive coordinator Jesse Pierce said. “As you have seen, there’s no easy ones in our league. … It’s essentially a playoff game one week early.”
Seven different players scored for St. Francis, which snapped a four-game skid. T.J. Jackson scored on a drive that included three would-be Butler touchdowns called back becauase of a penalty.
Wheaton Academy 48, Chicago Christian 27: At Palos Heights, senior fullback John Gemmel carried 12 times for 240 yards and three TDs as Wheaton Academy (4-4, 3-3 SCC Gold) gained more than 400 yards on the ground.
“John’s just a tough, downhill runner,” Warriors interim coach Brad Thornton said. “He’s not tall, so he’s kind of hard to find behind our bigger line. … He’s like a little bowling ball running through the lanes back there.”
Wheaton Academy must defeat SCC Blue power Marian Central next week to gain playoff eligibility.
Burlington Central 41, Rock Falls 24: At Burlington, BC (3-5) claimed the Big Northern Conference crossover to win for the second time in three games. The Rockets are set to close the season at North Boone next week.
Glenbard East Autumnfest tournament: At Lombard, St. Charles East improved to 24-5 by sweeping a pair of pool play matches, defeating Rockton Hononegah (26-24, 25-22) and Wheaton Warrenville South (25-18, 25-17).
Anne Hughes contributed 31 digs for the Saints, while Meagan Smith (11 kills), Megan Schildmeyer (10) and Dana Voltolina (10) sparked a balanced attack.
