KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week: Burlington Central boys golf’s Matt Weber
Why he was selected: Weber finished second in the Class 2A boys golf state tournament at Illinois State’s Weibring Golf Club in Normal.
Burlington Central senior boys golfer Matt Weber scored a 1-over par 143 at the two-day Class 2A state tournament over the weekend, finishing a stroke behind Rockford Boylan’s Danny Gorman for the individual title. Weber, an Indiana recruit and the most recent Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about his rounds. The following is an edited transcript:
You seem at peace about the result, even though things were awfully close.
I played really well [Saturday]. I hit a lot of really good shots, made a ton of putts. I just hit too many selfish shots that were kind of wrong decisions, and those bogeys got the better of me.
What was the dynamic between you and Gorman being in the same group?
I thought all day that we’d know it would definitely be us two and the kid from East Peoria [Day 1 leader David Perkins]. When I got word of [Perkins struggling], we just kind of embraced it and said let the best man win.
Coming up [No. 18] was probably the most people on one golf hole that I’ve ever played. Must have been over 100 people with the winning teams coming in and the last individuals out there, too.
What is your plan for the coming weeks and offseason?
I’m probably going to take a few weeks off and not play anymore tournaments this fall. Then I’ll hit the offseason training with my coaches pretty hard, get ready for collegiate golf at Indiana.
