Wednesday, I spent a chilly afternoon on the football practice fields of St. Charles North High School watching the kickers practice.
Two kickers took turns setting balls on the stand, counting their steps and kicking through the goal posts.
Usually, I can see her ponytail sticking out of her helmet, but Kat Stutesman had tucked her hair just so it wasn't visible. She was wearing bright pink socks, but so was half of the varsity team. "They're the warmest," she said.
Kat is the only girl on the team, and the only female high school football player I've seen in a long time. She told me how she wanted to join the military after high school, possibly the Air Force Academy. Not to sound completely cliché, but – you go, girl!
