Gresey: Chronicle wins 18 journalism awards

The annual Northern Illinois Newspaper Association awards banquet took place Thursday night in DeKalb.

Eighteen awards were won by the Kane County Chronicle, including five first-place awards.

The first-place awards were for best religion reporting (won by reporter Ashley Sloboda); best sports reporting (won by sports editor Jay Schwab); best general feature (won by reporter Brenda Schory); best online photo gallery (won by photo editor Sandy Bressner); and best business/financial/consumer reporting (won by reporter Jonathan Bilyk).

Of Bilyk’s award-winning business stories, which were part of a two-part series on entrepreneurship published last year, the judges wrote: “This two-part series offered a fascinating look at the effort that an entrepreneur puts into her or his dream. Nice tips from local entrepreneurs and experts. Stats add to story instead of bogging down. Two easy, enjoyable reads.”

And of Bressner’s online photo gallery, which was comprised of shots from the Kane County Fair, the judges wrote: “Artful composition in all Kane County Fair shots brings out the beauty in everyday life. The time and care in these photos are apparent and pays off for readers.”

The Chronicle also won four second-place awards for best headline writing, best video, best online photo gallery and best feature photo.

In addition, the paper won nine third-place awards for best news story series, best tech/medical reporting, best general feature, best in-depth news story, best sports story, best website, best sports photo, best education reporting and best business/financial/consumer reporting.

Last year, the Chronicle won 15 NINA awards, including four first-place awards.
