SYCAMORE – A St. Charles middle school teacher was placed on leave Monday after he was arrested that morning on child pornography charges, authorities said.

Sycamore police arrived with a search warrant at 6 a.m. at the home of Jerome B. McCauley, 45, of the 300 block of Grant Street in Sycamore. A search of McCauley's home uncovered digital images and videos of child pornography, Sycamore Police Lt. Darrell Johnson said.

McCauley is charged with possession of child pornography, which is punishable up to seven years in prison. He also is charged with distribution of child pornography, which is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

McCauley, who coaches volleyball and teaches seventh-graders at Wredling Middle School, was placed on leave with pay Monday morning, St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

"In addition, we worked with the local [St. Charles] police department and secured all of his technology here in the district," Schlomann said, noting McCauley had a computer and an iPad.

McCauley's Internet access has been disabled, and he will be unable to access district property, including his school email address, Schlomann said.

"The safety of students dictates he won't be at school," the superintendent said.

Schlomann said McCauley is in his 19th year with the district.

Police have been investigating McCauley since August, when a Sycamore police detective assigned to Internet crimes discovered him to be in possession of child pornography, police said. Based on evidence they collected, police also found McCauley was distributing child pornography, Johnson said.

"There was enough (evidence) that we had now that would sustain the charges he would face," Johnson said.

Police began the investigation in August, when a Sycamore detective assigned to Internet crimes found an IP address associated with someone who may have possessed child pornography, police said.

After a series of subpoenas and search warrants, police recently connected McCauley to the child pornography, police said. The way McCauley had the material through a file-sharing program indicates he also distributed it, police said.

The investigation is still pending and more charges are possible, according to the Sycamore police news release. St. Charles police and school officials were notified of McCauley's arrest.

McCauley was taken to the DeKalb County jail.

District 303 planned to alert parents to the situation through its communication system Monday, Schlomann said. He said parents with any information should call the district at 331-228-2000 or the St. Charles Police Department at 630-377-4435.
