GENEVA – A Geneva man said he was alarmed when he heard shots fired near his home on Britta Lane shortly before 4 p.m. Halloween as police killed a sick raccoon.
Ken Brunkalla, who lives in the 800 block of Britta Lane, said he “heard four very distinct shots.”
Brunkalla said he was concerned because he saw at least one trick-or-treater in the area, and he and some of his neighbors weren’t sure what was going on.
Cmdr. Eric Passarelli wrote in an email that police had to “put down a very sick raccoon” in that area, but he didn’t know the exact address.
The call came in at 3:48 p.m., he wrote. Passarelli was not sure how many shots were fired.
“There are times that some of the animals, unfortunately, take more than one shot,” Passarelli wrote. “The officers are always certain that there is no risk to the public by putting the animal down.”
Brunkalla said he saw one trick-or-treater on the sidewalk in the area at the time he heard the shots, and it worried him and some of the neighbors.
“If there’s going to be a weapon fired, perhaps the neighbors should be informed in some way,” he said. “There were a couple of panicky phone calls going on.”
