SOUTH ELGIN – Village President Jim Hansen passed away Friday night after a battle with lung cancer.

Hansen, 53, had been village president since 2001. He had previously served as a village trustee since 1991.

"President Hansen truly cared about the community and the residents," South Elgin Village Administrator Larry Jones said in a statement. "He was approachable and open to input from citizens."

While in office, Hansen initiated "Coffee with the Mayor," where residents, who might be uncomfortable at a board meeting, could visit, ask questions and make suggestions.

Hansen is survived by his wife, Teri, their three sons and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., (Route 31), Elgin. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
