New Cubs manager Renteria guided Cougars in '99

New Cubs manager Rick Renteria brings much deeper ties to Geneva than most of his predecessors.

In 1999, when the club was a Florida Marlins affiliate, Renteria managed the Cougars to a 78-59 record and a Midwest League playoff berth.

Renteria, 51, had been the San Diego Padres bench coach since 2011. He managed in the Marlins' and Padres' minor league systems from 1998-2007.

The Cougars signed a two-year player-development contract with the Cubs in September 2012. The Cougars are set to open the 2014 season on April 3 at Quad Cities, with the home opener slated for April 8 against Fort Wayne.
