Gresey: Readers provide feedback on awards, news coverage

It’s been awhile since I’ve included reader feedback in my column.

The following is what we’ve recently heard about our news coverage.

First, reader Jim Ledbetter responded to my Oct. 26 column, which detailed the 18 awards that the Kane County Chronicle received last month from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association.

“Congratulations on those super-duper journalism awards!” Jim wrote in an email. “You have top-notch people under your care, and they deserve those awards. Don’t forget, however, that it takes good management and support for them to have license to work – and to earn – those great notices.”

Thanks so much for the email, Jim. (And thanks for the nod about good management!)

On that same note, reader Clint Hull sent sports editor Jay Schwab some feedback about the NINA awards, as well as the overall sports coverage that the Chronicle produces.

“Saw in the Chronicle last week that you received an award at a recent competition for the news industry. Congrats – well deserved,” Clint wrote. “Jay, I hope you know how many parents in the Tri-City area open up their Chronicle to the sports section each morning following all of the local high school sports events.

“Until you’re a parent, you truly don’t understand how much fun it is to see all these kids growing up (and coaching many of them in soccer, baseball, basketball) and finishing their career in high school sports. I truly love high school sports and enjoy reading about the local athletes, the various rivalries, etc., etc. You and your staff have a tough job keeping up with it all, but you do an outstanding job.”

In addition, reporter Nicole Weskerna received the following note from reader Bob Brown. Bob was commenting on Nicole’s coverage of the third annual bluegrass concert that was held at the Arcada Theatre and raised money for the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club and the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles.

“Thank you again for all the nice things that you wrote in your Saturday online article about our ‘Day of American Music’ and for covering our event for the Kane County Chronicle,” Bob wrote. “We had a blast and hope that you did, too!”

We appreciate the feedback. Want to send us your thoughts? Comments can be directed to me using the contact information at the end of this column.
