KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week ... St. Francis girls volleyball's Molly Haggerty
Why she was selected: Haggerty had 10 kills apiece in wins against Coal City (sectional championship) and Chicago Christian (supersectional) to propel Spartans to the 3A state semifinals
St. Francis sophomore Molly Haggerty is technically an underclassman, but at the tail end of her second straight impact varsity season for the Spartans, she certainly doesn't look the part. Haggerty helped the defending 3A state champion Spartans earn another trip to Redbird Arena this weekend with big nights last week in St. Francis' wins against Coal City and Chicago Christian. Haggerty, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports editor Jay Schwab after the Spartans' 25-10, 25-15 win against Chicago Christian in the IHSA Class 3A Joliet Catholic Supersectional on Saturday. The following is an edited transcript:
What does it mean to be going back to state?
It's always been my dream, seeing my sisters Meghan and Maddie going there, so that was always my dream when I was younger. So going back there twice is going to be awesome. I'm so excited, obviously to win, hopefully. I'm really excited just to be down there again.
How long did it take you to regroup emotionally after your sister got hurt?
It took me about a few days, just to get used to the concept that she wasn't going to be playing with us anymore. It was really hard but I had to deal with it because I knew she was going to be on the bench, helping me through it. She kind of calmed me down on the court so having her on the bench with us helped us a lot because she was a big leader on the team.
If you had to pick someone on your team to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?
I would say Lisa Mordell. She's very smart and she will help anyone before herself.
