KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week ... Aurora Christian football’s Brandon Walgren
Why he was selected: Walgren had 10 receptions for 179 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s Class 3A quarterfinal at Seneca, helping the Eagles to a 36-27 victory.
Aurora Christian senior wide receiver Brandon Walgren found open space against the Seneca secondary more often than not during Saturday’s Class 3A semifinal. His 10 receptons for 179 yards and a touchdown provided a constant for an Eagles offense that started inconsistently, while earning Walgren a nod as Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Walgren, whose standout postseason has helped his team move within one victory of playing for its third straight 3A state championship. The following is an edited transcript:
It didn’t seem that your footing was all that bad in the rain and mud.
You know, we’re used to playing on the turf and stuff, but, I mean, we’ve had some grass games this year, and it’s just important to get our cleats in. We came out before we warmed up and got our footing down, and this was just a good game.
Is grass drastically different, then?
It’s a little different with how you make your cuts and how you run your routes, but it’s not that different.
The team has been down this road before, but how does this test help?
We know we got their best shot. … Two more games [until a potential state championship]. Two more games.
