Saturday's prep roundup: Marmion wrestling rolls at quad

YORKVILLE – Marmion blazed through Saturday's wrestling quad at Yorkville, scoring sizable victories against the host Foxes (46-18), Plano (48-18) and Joliet West (56-12).

"I was extremely impressed with the way the kids wrestled," Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee said. "We didn't let in any letdowns and everybody wrestled hard for six minutes."

The result of the day came in the middle stages of the event, when Marmion 160-pounder Trace Carello defeated Plano's Wes Brown, 2-1, in double overtime. Brown placed fourth at the Class 1A state tournament last season.

Cumbee said "conditioning and staying in good position" put Carello over the top.

Kaneland 49, Lemont 18: At Lemont, Kaneland registered four falls – from Adam Mish (113 pounds), Jacob Shearer (120), Austin Parks (160) and Tom Price (170) – in a nonconference romp.

Kaneland notched one fall – Mish at 113 – during Thursday's 33-29 win against Sycamore, its first win in the series since 2006.

Wheaton Warrenville South mega dual: At Wheaton, St. Charles East rebounded from an opening loss to Libertyville to defeat Naperville Central and Wheaton Warrenville South.

Quinn Doherty won each of his matches at 120 pounds to cap a 4-0 weekend. The Saints rolled past Larkin in a home dual Friday.

Geneva splits: Geneva suffered a narrow defeat to Downers Grove South, 34-31, before handling Rich South, 66-9. The Vikings' Colin Parsons contributed a technical fall in his 132-pound match against Downers Grove South, winning in 4:40.

Quincy 64, Batavia 56:
At Quincy, Batavia (2-3) was unable to hold a 49-43 lead after three quarters.

Aurora Christian tournament: St. Edward 53, Aurora Christian 46: Host ACS fell short in the tournament title game despite Johnathan Harrell's game-high 19 points.

Batavia 64, Elgin 36:
At Batavia, 10 of the 11 Batavia players who entered the game scored, helping the Bulldogs improve to 5-1 (2-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division). Liza Fruendt (24 points) and Hannah Frazier (10) finished in double figures.

Crete-Monee Crosstown Shootout: Geneva 69, Bloom 55: At Crete, Abby Novak (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Sidney Santos (10 points, 10 rebounds) both notched double-doubles for Geneva. Morgan Seberger led the 5-2 Vikings with 21 points.

Antioch 58, Kaneland 46: At Maple Park, Kaneland jumped to a 21-15 advantage after one quarter but stalled after that. Ally VanBogaert led the 3-4 Knights with 11 points. Kelly Wallner contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.

Burlington Central 47, Hampshire 36: At Hampshire, Sam Pryor (15 points) and Alison Colby (11) guided BC. Colby swished three of Central's eight 3-pointers.

Montini 58, Aurora Central Catholic 21: At Lombard, Maggie O'Brien and Natalie Droeske scored five points apiece for ACC in Suburban Christian Conference play.

Aurora Christian 48, Marian Central 37: At Woodstock, Aurora Christian (5-3) nabbed a SCC win behind Alyssa Andersen's 26 points and six rebounds. Natasha Brown added 16 rebounds, eight points and five steals.
