ST. CHARLES – The District 303 Board of Education on Monday voted to approve the resignation of the St. Charles middle school teacher accused of having and distributing child pornography.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board approved Jerome McCauley’s resignation, effective Dec. 3, according to agenda documents.

Superintendent Don Schlomann, who had indicated the school board would begin the process for dismissing McCauley, said without McCauley’s resignation, it could have taken up to 90 days to complete the dismissal process.

In addition to multiple school board meetings, he said that process could have involved a hearing process, which would be a lot like a trial, only in front of the school board. Schlomann said McCauley submitted his resignation sometime last week.

“It’s beneficial certainly for the school district. It saved us legal fees and time,” Schlomann said. “I suspect it helped him because it allowed him to focus his resources on his criminal defense.”

The 45-year-old Sycamore resident was charged Oct. 28 on charges of having between 1,000 and 1,500 images and five to 10 videos of child pornography, some showing 12-year-old girls, according to DeKalb County court records.

His bond was set at $1 million, which a DeKalb County judge declined to reduce last month.

McCauley taught at Wredling Middle School and worked for District 303 for nearly 20 years, district officials have said.

He was placed on administrative leave without pay once district officials learned of the charges against him.

McCauley is next expected in court Jan. 9 for a status hearing.
