CAMPTON HILLS – Witnesses say the driver of a semi-tractor trailer avoided a more serious crash this morning when he jackknifed his truck in order to miss a line of cars waiting behind a school bus, according to police.

Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said the truck driver was heading south on Burlington Road in Campton Hills sometime before the start of school when the driver went over a hill and approached the line of cars waiting for a stopped school bus near Kings Mill Drive.

Hoffman said the truck driver did not have time to stop, so he instead went over the crest of the road and jackknifed the truck.

"Several drivers praised this guy," Hoffman said. "Rather than striking cars, he went and jackknifed."

No one was injured in the accident. Hoffman said that as of about 9:30 a.m., the truck driver was still waiting for his truck to be towed.

The police report was not yet complete as of this morning, but Hoffman said more details likely will be available later today.
