KCChronicle.com/preps athlete of the week: St. Charles East Wrestling’s D.J. McDermott
D.J. McDermott, St. Charles East, Wrestling, Sophomore
Why he was selected: McDermott earned wins by fall in big matches Thursday against Leyden and Friday against Geneva
Due to injury, St. Charles East sophomore D.J. McDermott made a belated season debut last week, and wasted no time making his presence felt at 120 pounds, scoring wins by fall Thursday against Leyden – East coach Jason Potter’s former program – and Friday against Geneva in a match that loomed large in the Upstate Eight Conference River race. McDermott then won another match against Antioch on Saturday before taking his first loss against Cary-Grove. McDermott, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about his hot start. The following is an edited transcript:
How much improvement have you made from last year to this year?
I think I made a lot of improvement. Last year I was a little bit undersized and this year I feel like I’ve gotten a lot bigger and stronger, and I feel like my shots have gotten a lot better.
How big were those matches last week against Leyden and Geneva?
It was my first week back. I wasn’t completely in shape. I was just pretty happy to get the fall, but I feel a lot better now. I think I kind of got back in the groove.
If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?
I’d probably go with Jason Weber because he’s like the smartest kid on the team.
