ST. CHARLES – After years of empty promises from one set of owners, Charlestowne Mall this year was sold to another company that has unveiled plans to revitalize the shopping center with a new name and a new look.
Representatives from The Krausz Companies Inc. shared their vision for the St. Charles mall in September, two months before the California-based company purchased the property at Kirk Road and Main Street for more than $9.5 million.
The Krausz Companies – which has developed commercial, retail and industrial properties in California, Hawaii and Arizona – intend to rename the mall The Quad St. Charles.
Renovations are expected to start in April. Exterior changes include patio dining and a neighborhood feeling. Inside, planned amenities include a center court with a fireplace and comfortable seating, and family-friendly areas.
“The mall is going to be a place where people go to be entertained – again,” Jay E. Krigsman, executive vice president of The Krausz Companies, told the Kane County Chronicle in November. “The Quad is where you go to meet up with friends, get a cup of coffee and watch the people. ‘Let’s hang out at the quad – I’m sure someone’s over there.’”
Potential financial incentives haven’t yet been discussed during St. Charles City Council meetings, but the council in November approved an amendment needed to facilitate the property’s redevelopment.
