Kaneland High School senior Samantha Garcia shares a laugh with physical therapist Monse Dominguez at Rush Copley Medical Center. Garcia, of Montgomery, is recovering from severe injuries sustained in a car crash last July.

MONTGOMERY – Samantha Garcia continued to make significant progress in her recovery from a serious car crash. In June, Garcia participated in Kaneland High School’s graduation ceremony.

Also, she took part in the Metal Walk at Harrah’s Casino in Joliet, in which she was the honorary race beneficiary. Garcia was the official walk starter. The event honors patients who have overcome joint replacement.

Garcia was injured in the 2012 crash, which took place less than a mile away from her home. Driving on Route 30, Garcia veered off the road and lost control of her vehicle, rolling at least six times. She wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and she was ejected from her vehicle and landed on her right arm, which was severely injured. She suffered brain trauma, and her future was uncertain.

Since then, Garcia has made progress through her rehabilitation.

She was Kaneland’s homecoming queen in 2012, and she was able to return to classes.

At her graduation, Garcia accomplished a goal beyond merely being part of the ceremony. She brought her cane, but she said her goal was to walk across the stage on her own, which she did.
